Developing Success

Larry Taylor and Mike Rickman
06/02/2008

In a recent start-up center in South Carolina, a large group of physicians was recruiting a managing partner for a recently acquired certificate of need (CON).

After meeting with the group and being selected for the project, the data collection and meeting process began. Practice Partners in Healthcare (PPH) collected the appropriate data to develop the proforma data and reviewed it with the physician partners — making adjustments, determining practice patterns, cost structures and reviews — until it reflected the practices of the partnership.

The successful proforma reflected the physicians CPT (current procedural terminology) codes, historical data and expense base producing winning margins that are achievable. PPH produces proforma data with actual market data, net revenues, payor experience and expenses that will transform into reality. Within a two-week period the partnership approved the project.

The PPH team and physicians met with the construction and design team to create the greatest economies and efficiencies in design, materials and scope of the project. An important aspect was the involvement of the PPH team, from the initial concept, in allowing for the physicians direction and PPH experience to merge into a successful plan.

The team met on-site monthly to assure progress and work with the design/construction team. This aspect assured communication and modifications between all members of the team. The final result was an on-time project with coordinated delivery and equipment installations by the PPH team.

PPH tied the project together by being a one-stop-shop that developed the equipment plan; assuring selection, price and delivery to obtain a rapid deployment into the operational phase. Beyond price and application, PPH develops relationships for service and responses to corrective actions when problems occur.

An essential component of a successful team is recruiting, and the recruiting process is a focal point of the process of bringing on employees during key phases to control cost and a training schedule to facilitate the initial case deployment.

PPH used the clinical teams’ strength, networking and philosophies to retain the best in the marketplace. PPH’s clinical team of registered nurses and administrators recruited talent to the center and then committed the resources to strengthen all functions providing cross-training, team work and active participation.
