Kaiser Permanente Names New Executive Director for Columbia Gateway Medical Center
01/22/2003
COLUMBIA, Md. -- Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States has appointed Susan Moriarty, MD, as executive director at its Columbia Gateway medical center. "Dr. Moriarty brings a depth and breadth of experience that will build on fine work accomplished at our medical center since it opened last year," said Giles Manley, MD, and area medical director for Kaiser Permanente. "Amy Compton-Phillips, MD, our original executive director, led the center as it attracted more patients than projected and delivered high patient satisfaction. However, Dr. Compton-Phillips recently asked to reduce her hours so she could spend more time with her young children. I am pleased that she will continue to practice at Columbia Gateway on a part-time basis." Moriarty has been practicing at Kaiser Permanente's Columbia Gateway medical center since early last year. She is board certified in pediatrics and in pediatric emergency medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Virginia and completed her residency at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. Before joining Kaiser Permanente, she was a contract attending physician at The Canberra Hospital in Canberra, Australia and a resuscitation education consultant for multiple hospitals in Australia. Previously, she served as medical director of the pediatric emergency department at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore for eight years and was a fellow at the University of Maryland Hospital. Moriarty has also served as the chief of pediatrics at the Navajo Nation Health Foundation in Ganado, Arizona. In addition to her practice experience, Moriarty has had many academic appointments, including as an instructor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and as an associate faculty at the University of Arizona School of Medicine. She has also provided instruction in advanced pediatric life support and advanced trauma life support and has given presentations on the medical management of chemical, biological, and nuclear terrorism, on the comparison of Irish and American well-child care, and on home remedies and medical science. Kaiser Permanente opened the 17,000 square-foot Columbia Gateway medical center last January. Physicians practice in pediatrics, internal medicine, family practice, obstetrics/gynecology, dermatology, general surgery, and orthopedics. In addition to receiving care from physicians with the Mid- Atlantic Permanente Medical Group practicing at Columbia Gateway, Kaiser Permanente members have the option of seeing more than 30 primary care practitioners located throughout Howard County.
