RxHub and Regenstrief Partner to Provide Up-to-Date Patient Medication History to Physicians at the Point of Care

ST. PAUL, Minn. and INDIANAPOLIS -- RxHub(R), the company that electronically routes up-to-date patient medication history and pharmacy benefit information, and Regenstrief Institute, an internationally recognized informatics and healthcare research organization, today announced they have partnered strategically to deliver medication history data to clinicians throughout Indiana, starting with central Indiana. Regenstrief will integrate the patient specific medication history and make it accessible to clinicians at the point of care. Due to the complexity of medication prescribing practices, the potential for medication errors and adverse drug events (ADEs) has risen sharply. This partnership will allow Regenstrief to develop methods to deliver medication history data to provider systems enabling physicians to avoid drug duplication and ADEs, assisting with the assessment of a patient's current health condition, and recommendation for treatment.

Clement McDonald, MD, of the Regenstrief Institute, commented, "A more complete picture of the patient's medications is one of the most common requests we hear from our physicians when caring for patients in the Emergency Department and at hospital admission." "According to our research, while ADEs are a big problem for inpatients, they are probably four times as big a problem for outpatients," said J. Marc Overhage, MD, PhD, who is an investigator at the Regenstrief Institute and newly named President and CEO of the Indiana Health Information Exchange. "By partnering with RxHub, we will measure the value of providing patient medication history to clinicians in various care settings and hope to improve safety for our patients, the quality of their care and at the same time save money for the overall healthcare system."

Providing relevant patient information and clinical knowledge to the clinician, reduces the risk of prescription errors, and can help eliminate the nearly 2.1 million adverse drug events that occur annually in the United States. Regenstrief and RxHub are working together to allow clinicians to develop new and better ways to deliver services, monitor health and manage the care of their patients.
