Eliminating Wrinkles, Lines and Cellulite

11/17/2004

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Cellulite, wrinkles and sagging can't be fixed on the treadmill -- but a new procedure from France may be just what the doctor orders for your skin.

"We all have fat under our skin, but as we age and increase our sun exposure, our collagen fibers get weaker and weaker," says Dr. Fadi Saba, M.D., and founder of Professional Health Care of Pinellas. "This can result in cellulite, wrinkles and sagging."

Cellulite occurs when fat cells increase in size and their membranes become distorted and lose their shape. This results in a dimpling appearance and is further impaired by the build up of toxins within the connective tissues. And diet and exercise alone won't make it go away.

"Cellulite is one of the hardest things to get rid of because fatty tissue is poorly vascularized," says Saba. "Exercise and diet both affect deeper fat, but won't completely remedy the underlying problem within the superficial tissues of the skin."

Heredity, body weight, an unbalanced diet and other environmental factors such as air pollution and tobacco can cause the structure of the skin to loose its firmness and sag, much like unused muscles.

Botox®, facelifts, dermabrasion and liposuction are all invasive treatments that paralyze, tighten, smooth and suck out fat but they can also be expensive and risky procedures for patients.

But two new FDA approved treatments from the LPG company in France, Endermologie (for cellulite) and Cosmecanique (for wrinkles and sagging), can help correct the underlying issues of the skin with a non-invasive fitness regimen that gets dormant collagen active again, reducing the appearance of lines, wrinkles and cellulite.

"The treatments work by stimulating the basal cells of the skin so more collagen can lay down to regain its strength and firmness," says Saba, whose practice is the first to bring the latest versions of these treatments to the Tampa Bay area. "A patient comes in and spends an hour with the full treatment. Most people see results on their first visit, but after 10 to 14 sessions you'll see the full results."

Saba says the treatments, along with exercising, eating well and good skin care, can make the youthful effects last longer.
