Generex Biotechnology Granted U.S. Patent for Buccal Delivery of Pain Relief Medications

02/10/2005

TORONTO -- Generex Biotechnology Corporation, a leader in the area of buccal drug delivery, announced that it has been granted another United States patent. The patent entitled, "Pharmaceutical compositions for buccal delivery of pain relief medications," relates to a narcotic analgesic formulation delivered into the human body by way of the buccal mucosa in the mouth.

The formulations covered by the patent are applications of the company's proprietary RapidMist drug delivery technology and are designed to deliver pain relief medications such as morphine and fentanyl in a safe, simple, fast, effective and convenient alternative to injections and tablets.

This patent demonstrates the versatility of the RapidMist drug delivery platform. The platform, initially applied to insulin (the company's proprietary oral insulin formulation, Oral-lyn), a large molecule drug, can also be applied to small molecule drugs such as morphine and fentanyl, thereby significantly increasing the number of indications for the platform.

"Our mission is to improve drug delivery by making it simpler, more comfortable and more effective, thereby refining and augmenting therapeutic applications and facilitating increased patient compliance," said Anna Gluskin, president and CEO of Generex.

The application of the RapidMist platform, the efficacy of which has already been supported by late stage clinical trials of Oral-lyn, to pain relief and management drugs delivered by traditional means for many years should facilitate market access and licensing opportunities.
