Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group Surgicenter Achieves AAAASF Accreditation

05/30/2006

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- When the Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group Surgicenter in Greenville, S.C. moved into a new facility about a year and a half ago and added an invitrofertilization (IVF) lab, they recognized the need to set even higher standards of excellence and patient care.  They elected to become accredited by The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF), recognized as the Gold Standard in Accreditation.

"While we have accredited our labs previously, we have never had our operating room accredited through an organization such as AAAASF.  The accreditation process took about a year from the beginning research to the actual certification. Since the standards were thorough, but not unreasonable, we were prepared," said John E. Nichols Jr., MD, and medical director of the surgicenter. He added, "Since we do procedures ranging from minimal surgery to more complex surgical cases requiring general anesthesia in our OR suite, the comfort level for us as well as our patients must be greater. We can all sleep better at night knowing that we have gone the extra mile to meet all the AAAASF accreditation standards."

Nichols noted that with the addition of a fully equipped surgical suite for IVF procedures, "We recognized that accreditation would be important since our facility is unique in that we are doing IVF instead of lengthy surgical cases so some things are different. AAAASF's standards could accommodate our surgcienter's atypical surgical approach. The inspection took about four hours and our inspector was very pleasant and thorough."
