UASCA Posts YouTube Video to Muster State Action to Release Insurance Companies’ Restrictive Grasp

02/01/2008

The Utah Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (UASCA) join consumer Iris Tolley in her fight against large health insurance organizations who restrict patient choice while focusing on profits before people. The organization also released an informative video to support legislation to give consumers the right to choose their own healthcare providers and where they receive care.

“Iris Tolley is a brave woman and there are thousands of people like her who are treated like ‘numbers’ by big corporate insurance, and that is just not right,” states Francis Gibson, vice president of the UASCA. “These insurance carriers are restricting choice, stifling competition and putting profits before people,” he adds.

The video features newspaper clippings and state senators, but most gripping is the chilling end that delivers Tolley’s strong message. She notes in the video her experience with adverse events after she was forced to have her first mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in the hospital and compares her outcomes to that of her second set of procedures that were later done in an outpatient surgery center. The 30-year veteran of the armed forces, who notes her commitment to America’s freedom of choice, is battling stage four terminal cancer.

“My voice I would like to be heard until it is silenced,” Tolley chokes in conclusion.

The insurance industry is powerful and has enlisted an army of lobbyists to kill any legislation in Utah that stimulates competition, saying that anything new will drive up costs, the UASCA notes. UASCA and other organizations point to studies that show insurance and health costs still climbing and insurance monopolies taking over in many states.

UASCA has prepared the video to educate and mobilize Utah healthcare consumers and Americans across the country to call state legislators to express their outrage over the actions of large insurance companies and urge support for efforts to create more patient choice and competition.
