Industry Loses Valued Professional

06/04/2008

Susan Hollander, vice president of operations with National Surgical Care (NSC) died unexpectedly Monday, May 26.

A press release sent by NSC notes that Hollander was an industry leader and beloved NSC team member. “She leaves behind a life marked with significant personal and professional achievements,” the release says.

Susan Hollander, a recognized ASC industry leader, died May 26.

Hollander devoted her career to working in healthcare and for nearly two decades had been fully committed to the advancement of the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) industry.

“Susan was a wonderful person with the highest of integrity,” said Sami Abbasi, chairman and chief executive officer of National Surgical Care. “She was an integral part of our NSC team and a strong contributor to our successes. We are very saddened by her passing and will miss her dearly. Her numerous accomplishments within NSC and the significant impact she has made on the ASC industry will be remembered for many years to come.”

Hollander earned her bachelor degree in nursing at Slippery Rock University and her MBA at the University of Pittsburgh. She began her career as an independent nursing services partner before venturing into the ASC industry in 1989. She worked as a surgery center manager and joined National Surgery Centers in 1992. Hollander spent five years with the company, first as a regional director of operations, then as regional director of development.

She spent four years as an assistant operating officer for Duke University Health System, developing and operating the ASC for this academic medical center. In addition, she managed a second community-based ASC and a lithotripsy center along with hospital administration accountabilities. She worked as National Surgical Care’s vice president of operations since 2002.

Susan was named to the Who’s Who in the Ambulatory Surgery Industry by today’s surgicenter magazine in 2007 and was a regular speaker at the annual today’s surgicenter conference, as well as at other national ASC industry conferences. She served nine years on the FASA board of directors chairing such committees as the state association committee and the recovery care center committee. She also had been an AAAHC surveyor since 1996.

Hollander also was a fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives.

“Susan was a truly cherished member of the ASC industry and the NSC team. We will miss her dearly.”
