Physician Hospitals of America Applauds Congress on Supplemental Appropriation

Provisions harmful to hospitals owned by physicians dropped from final legislation

06/30/2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Physician Hospitals of America (PHA), representing the nation’s physician owned hospitals, applauds the wisdom of Congress in passing supplemental appropriations legislation that did not contain proposed language harmful to PHA members.

An earlier version of the bill crafted by the Senate Appropriations Committee included very troubling language, tied to a debate over Medicaid rules. PHA argued that this language had no place in a supplemental appropriations bill dealing primarily with military spending. Fortunately,Congress in its final negotiations with the Administration agreed with that view.

PHA executive director Molly Sandvig said, “We are very pleased that Congress dropped this language. Physician owned hospitals are providing high quality care every day to thousands of patients. If this provision had passed, medical care in many communities would have been disrupted in a significant way.”

“I want to thank all the PHA members who worked so hard on this effort. PHA is especially grateful for the strong support from members of Congress like Reps. Sam Johnson and Joe Barton, Sens. Jon Kyl, Tom Coburn, Mike Crapo John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison. These members and countless others have seen the value our members bring to their communities and understand the importance of continuing to encourage physician owned and directed hospital care.”
